Description
A delightful twist on traditional French toast, this baked version is soaked in a rich custard and loaded with mixed berries. Perfect for a cozy breakfast or brunch!
Ingredients
– 6 thick slices of day-old bread (brioche or challah work best)
– 4 large eggs
– 1 cup milk
– 1/2 cup heavy cream
– 1/4 cup maple syrup
– 1 tsp vanilla extract
– 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
– Pinch of salt
– 2 cups mixed berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries; hulled and sliced if needed)
– Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
2. Arrange the bread slices in a single layer in the dish, slightly overlapping if necessary.
3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt.
4. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread, pressing lightly so the bread absorbs the liquid.
5. Scatter the mixed berries evenly over the top.
6. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the custard is set and the top is lightly golden.
7. Remove from the oven, let cool for a few minutes, and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
– For extra indulgence, serve with additional maple syrup or a dollop of whipped cream.
– Day-old bread works best as it absorbs the custard without becoming too mushy.
– Feel free to swap or add your favorite berries.
– Can be prepared a few hours ahead; cover and refrigerate, then reheat in the oven before serving.
