Description

A comforting twist on the classic French dip sandwich, these French Dip Squares feature tender roast beef layered over crusty French bread, smothered in melted Swiss cheese, and baked to perfection. Enjoy them warm with a side of rich, savory au jus for dipping.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 lbs thinly sliced roast beef (leftover or deli-style works well)
  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese
  • Optional: Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Sauté Aromatics: In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the sliced onion and minced garlic in a drizzle of oil until softened and lightly caramelized (about 5–7 minutes). Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
  • Assemble the Dish: In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spread out the cubed French bread evenly. Layer the sliced roast beef on top, then distribute the sautéed onions and garlic over the beef.
  • Prepare Au Jus Mixture: In a bowl, whisk together the beef broth, water, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Pour this mixture evenly over the assembled layers.
  • Top with Cheese: Sprinkle the shredded Swiss cheese evenly over the top.
  • Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the edges of the bread are crisp.
  • Garnish and Serve: Allow to cool slightly, garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired, and cut into squares. Serve with additional warmed au jus for dipping.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, try toasting the French bread cubes lightly before assembling.
  • Adjust the seasonings to suit your taste—adding a dash of dried thyme or rosemary can complement the beef beautifully.
  • This dish makes a great make-ahead meal; simply reheat in the oven before serving.
