Description
Homemade biscuits are soft, flaky, and buttery treats that are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a side dish. Made with simple ingredients like flour, baking powder, butter, and milk, these biscuits are easy to prepare and bake in just about 30 minutes.
Ingredients
– 2 cups all-purpose flour
– 1 tablespoon baking powder
– 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, very cold
– 3/4 cup whole milk (buttermilk can also be used)
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
3. Grate the cold butter using a box grater and add it to the flour mixture. Alternatively, cut the butter into small cubes and use a pastry cutter to incorporate it into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
4. Pour in the milk and stir gently until just combined. Do not overmix.
5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together. Pat the dough into a rectangle about 1 inch thick.
6. Using a biscuit cutter or a glass, cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they are close together for soft sides or spaced apart for crispier edges.
7. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
8. Remove from the oven and let the biscuits cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
– For extra flaky biscuits, consider folding the dough over itself a few times before cutting out the biscuits.
– If using buttermilk, you can reduce the baking powder to 2 teaspoons and omit the sugar for a more traditional flavor.
– Serve warm with butter, jam, or gravy.
