Description

Texas Toast Sloppy Joes offer a delightful twist on the classic sandwich, featuring savory ground beef in a tangy sauce served atop crispy garlic Texas toast and topped with melted cheese. This hearty and satisfying meal is perfect for busy weeknights or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

– 1 pound lean ground beef

– 1 tablespoon butter

– 1/4 cup chopped yellow onion

– 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper

– 1 cup ketchup

– 1/4 cup water

– 1/4 cup packed brown sugar

– 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

– 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

– 2 teaspoons chili powder

– 1 teaspoon salt

– 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

– 1 box (8 slices) frozen garlic Texas toast

– 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

1. **Cook the Beef Mixture**: In a large non-stick skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper, and sauté until they begin to soften, about 3-5 minutes. Add the ground beef, cooking and crumbling until it’s no longer pink. Drain any excess grease.

2. **Prepare the Sloppy Joe Sauce**: To the skillet with the beef, add ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, red wine vinegar, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine. Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. **Bake the Texas Toast**: While the beef mixture is simmering, preheat the oven and prepare the garlic Texas toast according to the package instructions. Place the slices on a baking sheet and bake until golden brown.

4. **Assemble the Sloppy Joes**: Once the Texas toast is ready, keep the slices on the baking sheet. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over each slice of toast. Top each with a generous amount of shredded mozzarella cheese.

5. **Melt the Cheese**: Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

6. **Serve**: Remove from the oven and serve immediately.

Notes

– For a spicier version, add a dash of hot sauce or increase the amount of chili powder.

– Substitute cheddar cheese for mozzarella if preferred.

– Serve with a side salad or roasted vegetables for a complete meal.

– Leftover sloppy joe mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
