Units Scale

For the Dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed (110°F)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Filling:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

For the Frosting:

  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp heavy cream or milk

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
    • In another bowl, whisk together the warm milk, melted butter, eggs, red food coloring, and vanilla extract.
    • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry, mixing until a dough forms.
    • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • Make the Filling:
    • In a small bowl, mix together sugar, cocoa powder, and cinnamon.
  • Roll and Fill:
    • Punch down the dough and roll it into a 12×16-inch rectangle.
    • Spread softened butter evenly over the dough. Sprinkle the sugar, cocoa, and cinnamon mixture over the butter.
  • Shape the Rolls:
    • Starting from the long edge, tightly roll up the dough into a log. Slice into 12 equal pieces and arrange them in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
    • Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Bake:
    • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the cinnamon rolls for 20–25 minutes or until lightly golden.
  • Prepare the Frosting:
    • Beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until creamy.
    • Add vanilla extract and powdered sugar, mixing until smooth.
    • Add heavy cream or milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the frosting reaches your desired consistency.
  • Frost and Serve:
    • Spread the frosting over the warm red velvet cinnamon rolls. Serve immediately for a soft, gooey treat!

Notes

  • For a more vibrant red color, adjust the amount of food coloring as desired.
  • Rolls can be prepared a day ahead and baked fresh in the morning.
  • Add heart-shaped sprinkles or edible glitter for extra Valentine’s flair!
